Hold Your breath

I treat my paintings as diary entries so this is like a documentation of a part of my life. Most of my paintings are self portraits with no concept behind them. I have been exploring my subconscious through most of my paintings by just painting, as if i’m doodling, and having no plan or thoughts on how the work may finally turn out. A way to put it is by thinking of it as improv painting. My painting style is highly influenced by psychedelics, but not necessarily focusing on them. The title of my show, “Hold your breath” comes from the idea that the longer someone holds in their breath while smoking marijuana, the “higher” they get.

Weather it’s a conscious decision or not, everything I paint is valuable to me. Moreover, I feel that the value of most art pieces, now a days, is judged by the concept behind it rather that just the work as it is. Which is a thought I constantly toy with when it comes to my work. These thoughts were not in my mind while naming my show, yet it coexists perfectly since every being on earth values their breath the most, even though holding on to it is no good no matter how valuable it is. I feel that this teaches me something about myself, just as my paintings do as well.
